I admire you for this. I have threatened my phone for years, threatened to throw it in the ocean.
I remember the days where there was no caller id on landlines. Every call was mysterious, answering the ring…. Hello??
I remember using paper maps or just being told directions and following them from a piece of paper.
Then I remembered the car phones with cords. Then pagers. The GPS tom, tom.
Then my Nokia, my Nextel, you used to be able to take out the batteries on the cell, then came colored screens, then texting became the way most communicate- and I missed hearing a voice. Tone of voice is so important to me, to language, to understanding what one is trying to express.

yeah, but what’s the alternative? if i hear one more couple fucking, one more baby crying, one more drum and bass song at 4am, one more domestic dispute… i would just rather die than go back to apartment / condo living.
wait… “Perhaps most importantly, I don’t have to give away my cellphone number to social media platforms harvesting my data so that my every move (on and offline) can be tracked by alphabet agencies” …. who’s number do you use for this account then?
We need to recognize that social media is far more than just a harmless distraction or handy tool. Rather, it has been brilliantly architected as a comprehensive net or web for the mind that can be used to alter our thoughts and behaviors, and from there redirect the creative focus of our attention, usually without our even realizing it.
The Gallagher darts idea is brilliant. Public shaming through visible markers would be way more effective than fines since it creates instant social feedback. I've found myself gettin frustrated in public when someone's phone conversation invades everyone's space, but there's no recourse except just moving away. A "douchebag" sticker system would actualy make people think twice before being that person.

To be totally honest, I’ve never had a cellphone of my own. If I really need to make a call while I’m out and about, I borrow someone else’s. If I want to surf the internet, I emulate our forefathers and use a computer. Instead of texting I usually do something rather more archaic: I email people.
Great post Sol. While I do admit to being nervous about not having my black mirror with me, I did get rid of many SM apps, so as not to spread my attention/energy to all these SM dopamine harvesting traps; and instead focusing on my creativity. Baby steps...baby steps...right?
From one Luddite to another, YASSS! I love this! I've been cellphone-free since 2015 when I realized the dinging and ringing was driving me insane. I have one for emergencies, but it's always powered off and the battery is usually dead. So I carry a Jackery in my car... in case I need to plug it in to a power source to use it.
It's amazing how many people throw a fit when you aren't available to them 24/7. The freedom of not hearing any beeps or ringing all this time has been absolute bliss. The few times I need to make calls to service pros hits hard with the, "I think you're cutting out, let me call you back" 🤪
My coffee place wants me to use their app to get free stuff and I'm like, "I don't use a cellphone" and they look at me like they can't believe it!
Haha it's great knowing I'm not the only one. I don't even know what I'm doing half the time in this world, but I know I'm not alone :P
People are interesting to observe with their phones, though. My home office window faces the stairs for another building, and this girl comes out every morning and takes a selfie with a big fake smile that disappears immediately after she snaps the picture. I always wonder if she's posting to Instagram or Facebook... every day! Phones really are like a drug! I miss the 90s and payphones and sending cryptic pager messages.
